Disaster!

So worried about my spood right now. I did a stupid and gave her a waxworm... she hadn't been fed in a while, her abdomen was small, and she looked hungry. In the past she's only eaten part of an insect if she's gotten near full so I didn't really think, I guess... but she was getting sooooo full on this waxworm. I tried gently blowing on her to get her to drop it, and she just kept turning her back to me. Then I tried to cut it in half so she only got part of it, but she kept putting her legs around it like "my worm!" and I was scared that I'd cut her legs by accident so I couldn't go through with it. This was 2 days ago.
Now she's a super full, very engorged spood, who has taken to sitting in her substrate... and I'm very concerned about abdominal separation. If people aren't familiar with abdominal separation in spiders, it's where an over fed spider has such a heavy abdomen that the weight of it pulls down and physically breaks the internal connections between the abdomen and the cephalothorax. It's something that predominantly occurs in captive jumping spiders, as they wouldn't necessarily get enough food in the wild to cause such problems. Usually it is caused by an over fed spider falling when moving around their terrarium. I have no idea whether it can occur spontaneouly. There isn't a lot of information about it on the internet - its something I predominantly read about in spider owner forums. So I know very little about it, and I have questions!
How long will it take this to go down? If it did separate, would it kill her instantly? If not, how would I know it's happened... ? I'm massively anxious and I have more questions that I can't think of right now. She's never been this big before.
Another potential complication of waxworms is impaction. It's the spider equivalent of constipation. There is such a high fat content in a waxworm that their usually liquid poop can solidify, blocking them up and preventing them from relieving themselves. If this isn't rectified then it can slowly kill them. In a larger spider such as a tarantula, a warm wet cotton bud rubbed on the excretion site (read: spider bum hole!) can potentially relieve this malady, but in a spider as small as Winnie? It's not viable. Impaction would kill her.
If she stays down in the substrate then I guess that's a good thing risk-wise, but it's very unusual behaviour for her, so I'm still worried... Waxworms are most definitely off the menu permanently now as she just has no self control over them! I tried to give her a slice and she ate the whole damned cake! Snaccident is not the word - she is now a roly poly spood. I'm not sure she could move if she tried! Please keep your fingers crossed that she comes out of this okay.

In Memoriam: Summer edition

Unfortunately, due to the delayed nature of the posting on this blog, the things that I write about in the Summer don't get published until Winter, or vice versa. That's the limitation of a prolific poster writing up a buffer, to be released at regular intervals. It doesn't usually pose a problem, but as I write this post in the middle of Autumn - firstly, it is not going to hit the blog until next year. Secondly, due to the nature of the content here, it may interrupt continuity - I am writing to remember the charming little critters that I lost over this summer. Some of the deaths were expected, there had been plenty of warning. Other deaths were...surprising. But while I mention them here, due to the pre written nature of the content to come, there may be posts further down the line where these names and faces crop up again, almost as though I hadn't lost them. I've been umming and ahhing over the best time to place this post, and to be honest - there's...

Purple Spood has a Name

This new spood finally has a name! It has taken me a while to get around to it, because I was really struggling. I am really hoping that this spider is a male, because the males of this species take on a really vibrant purple colour once they grow on, while the females are a dusty brown. So I wanted a male name, but also something linked to the colour purple, to highlight my hopes for him. All of the purple-themed names I could think of sounded really girly, like "Lavender", or "Heather". But then it occurred to me - Purple Rain. My partner really came up with it, not me. But he's named after a certain purple singer/songwriter - Prince. Yeah, it might be cliche, but I'm really happy with it. So Prince it is!

Blogger Absences!

Sorry guys! I don't know if anyone actually reads my spider blog, but I'm sure if you do you'll have noticed that it's on a temporary hiatus. There are posts queued up, waiting to be edited and finished. I have plenty to write about, including the recent loss of my elderly mantis Catchy, and the rehousing of my Poecilotheria metallica (which was tense). But right now it has to wait, as I am currently juggling my job, my fmaily, and now my new Masters degree in Environmental Management. I will come back and update on all the lovely (and not so lovely) things that my critters have been up to. But for now, I'm afraid it will have to wait. Be safe all, and don't squish that spider!
