My current wishlist

Believe it or not, there are still Spoods that I would like to add to my collection. Yes, I am aware that I have a lot, and yes, I am aware that there is no hurry, and yes, I do know that I don't "gotta cetch 'em all". And to be honest, at this point, I probably won't get any more until Lolth, Shelob and Anansi have molted a couple more times and been moved into the next size of enclosure - a braplast tub. But! That isn't set in stone, mind you. If The Spider Shop get any of my "bucket" spiders in stock, then I might be swayed. Or if I suddenly come into enough money to afford some of the more expensive ones... So, in lieu of an actual post, here is my current wishlist:

Caribena versicolor, the Martinique pink toe tarantula. When I first saw this spider, I was convinced it was photoshopped. Even now, I can't quite believe that a single spider can come in so many vibrant, clearly defined, different colours. It's beautiful. But it is real. And in fact, as of last week, TSS did have them in stock. If they are still in stock at the end of the month, then I may well be tempted into another purchase. I will need to buy more live food by then anyway. If it's not in stock? Well then, it just wasn't meant to be at this time.
Poecilotheria miranda. The Bengal spotted ornamental. I have mentioned this before - this spider is like Poe's distant but gothic cousin. It also shares a name with my daughter. So as well as being beautiful, I am drawn to it for that reason. That said, it is an old world spider, and while it is billed as being "calmer" than it's jazzy cousin, this means it will bite. We will see how I get on with Poe, Lucifer and Asmodeus before I go running head first towards this one.
Phidippus regius. Despite my feelings about "replacing" Winnie, I still very much want to have a female jumping spider. They're adorable, charismatic bundles of fuzz, and I just love them so much. There will never be another Winnie, and some hard lessons have been learned through her passing. But I have an empty container sitting next to Fred which is desperately crying out for a little jumper to fill it. These are currently in stock at TSS, so maybe I'll get one this month, but it will all depend on Fred starting to eat. If I can't get him to eat, then I can't in good conscience get a third.
Typhochlaena seladonia, the Brazilian jewel tarantula. A dwarf tarantula like Loki, this spider is very distinctive due to the gorgeous colours on it's abdomen. Unfortunately, it is also £90 for a 1cm sling, which is not only prohibitive for me right now (straight after Christmas) but is a lot of money to spend on one spider, when I've already lost Winnie and am worried about Fred. MAny of my species are billed as "beginner" species, meaning that they are easy to look after. This one is on the long term wish list, and won't be finding it's way into my basket until I am absolutely sure that I can a) afford it, and b) look after it.

In Memoriam: Summer edition

Unfortunately, due to the delayed nature of the posting on this blog, the things that I write about in the Summer don't get published until Winter, or vice versa. That's the limitation of a prolific poster writing up a buffer, to be released at regular intervals. It doesn't usually pose a problem, but as I write this post in the middle of Autumn - firstly, it is not going to hit the blog until next year. Secondly, due to the nature of the content here, it may interrupt continuity - I am writing to remember the charming little critters that I lost over this summer. Some of the deaths were expected, there had been plenty of warning. Other deaths were...surprising. But while I mention them here, due to the pre written nature of the content to come, there may be posts further down the line where these names and faces crop up again, almost as though I hadn't lost them. I've been umming and ahhing over the best time to place this post, and to be honest - there's...

Purple Spood has a Name

This new spood finally has a name! It has taken me a while to get around to it, because I was really struggling. I am really hoping that this spider is a male, because the males of this species take on a really vibrant purple colour once they grow on, while the females are a dusty brown. So I wanted a male name, but also something linked to the colour purple, to highlight my hopes for him. All of the purple-themed names I could think of sounded really girly, like "Lavender", or "Heather". But then it occurred to me - Purple Rain. My partner really came up with it, not me. But he's named after a certain purple singer/songwriter - Prince. Yeah, it might be cliche, but I'm really happy with it. So Prince it is!

Blogger Absences!

Sorry guys! I don't know if anyone actually reads my spider blog, but I'm sure if you do you'll have noticed that it's on a temporary hiatus. There are posts queued up, waiting to be edited and finished. I have plenty to write about, including the recent loss of my elderly mantis Catchy, and the rehousing of my Poecilotheria metallica (which was tense). But right now it has to wait, as I am currently juggling my job, my fmaily, and now my new Masters degree in Environmental Management. I will come back and update on all the lovely (and not so lovely) things that my critters have been up to. But for now, I'm afraid it will have to wait. Be safe all, and don't squish that spider!
