What's in the Mystery Box?

I got my replacement female jumping spider today, Phidippus regius. I haven't opened the tube yet to let her out as I am still at work. As such, she doesn't even have a name as yet because I wanted to see her before I named her. Her theoretical name at the moment is Winona - Close enough to Winnie that I still feel that I have my Winnie, but different enough to not be a direct replacement. And obviously, a play on Winona Ryder (Winona Spider). I have also received my Caribena versicolor (also still in it's tube), three braplast tubs to rehouse my original Spood trio (photos to come), and another arboreal sling keeper. All exactly as I expected, no issues here.
But.... I also received my first mystery box. I've never ordered a mystery box before, and common sense ought to have deterred me, as a novice. But I was bored, and the devil makes work for idle hands.... So I ordered a £30 mystery box from The Spider Shop. And, well. I don't regret it, that's for sure. But! The mystery box was as much a surprise as it possibly could have been.
TSS have an area on their shipping form where you can enter information, make requests (such as which sex jumping spider you would like) or anything else that may be relevant. When I ordered my mystery box, I specifically said that my 6 yr old helps my with my invertebrates as I'm trying to show her that they're nothing to be scared of. I mentioned that I was open to anything (including scorpions) but that I didn't want anything with a nasty bite or sting; I listed inverts that I had had experience with before. I joked with colleagues later on that I'd probably end up with a scorpion, without actually believing that I would get a scorpion.... And... Well... Now I have one! Heterometrus loaticus to be exact.
I'm laughing about it now because I have done my initial panic. I always wanted a scorpion as a child and my mum would never let me have one - she always worried that it would get out of the tank and end up in my sisters bed. So when I opened my box and I saw this latin name that I didn't recognise, I googled it, and when the first pictures of this large black scorpion appeared on my screen, I froze. Fortunately, I needn't have worried. TSS have done their job - the scorpion in my box is definitely a beginners scorpion, near enough bulletproof (according to what I've read), and has a sting akin to a bee or wasp sting. So for now, he stays. The biggest problem being that I don't have an enclosure suitable for a relatively large (about 5cm) scorpion. I will have to buy one next week - in the meantime, I have borrowed a tank from work.
Also included in the mystery box were a Yunnan flower mantis, Creoboter sp. Yunnan, and a Lasiodora parahybana, or Salmon pink birdeater. I already have an L. parahybana - named Joy who will need rehousing pretty soon, so these two were both welcome additions. There was also some extra substrate, and some cork bark for a hide.
Overall, I was very happy with my mystery box. I would definitely order one again - though maybe not for a while because once these guys have been moved into their respective homes, I will have no more space on my shelf! My spider buying has been halted, albeit temporarily. Though that may well be for the best - I seem to have gone from being arachnophobic to being obsessed. Common sense needs to prevail at some point. Rehousing pics are to follow.

In Memoriam: Summer edition

Unfortunately, due to the delayed nature of the posting on this blog, the things that I write about in the Summer don't get published until Winter, or vice versa. That's the limitation of a prolific poster writing up a buffer, to be released at regular intervals. It doesn't usually pose a problem, but as I write this post in the middle of Autumn - firstly, it is not going to hit the blog until next year. Secondly, due to the nature of the content here, it may interrupt continuity - I am writing to remember the charming little critters that I lost over this summer. Some of the deaths were expected, there had been plenty of warning. Other deaths were...surprising. But while I mention them here, due to the pre written nature of the content to come, there may be posts further down the line where these names and faces crop up again, almost as though I hadn't lost them. I've been umming and ahhing over the best time to place this post, and to be honest - there's...

Purple Spood has a Name

This new spood finally has a name! It has taken me a while to get around to it, because I was really struggling. I am really hoping that this spider is a male, because the males of this species take on a really vibrant purple colour once they grow on, while the females are a dusty brown. So I wanted a male name, but also something linked to the colour purple, to highlight my hopes for him. All of the purple-themed names I could think of sounded really girly, like "Lavender", or "Heather". But then it occurred to me - Purple Rain. My partner really came up with it, not me. But he's named after a certain purple singer/songwriter - Prince. Yeah, it might be cliche, but I'm really happy with it. So Prince it is!

Blogger Absences!

Sorry guys! I don't know if anyone actually reads my spider blog, but I'm sure if you do you'll have noticed that it's on a temporary hiatus. There are posts queued up, waiting to be edited and finished. I have plenty to write about, including the recent loss of my elderly mantis Catchy, and the rehousing of my Poecilotheria metallica (which was tense). But right now it has to wait, as I am currently juggling my job, my fmaily, and now my new Masters degree in Environmental Management. I will come back and update on all the lovely (and not so lovely) things that my critters have been up to. But for now, I'm afraid it will have to wait. Be safe all, and don't squish that spider!
